THE VOLCANOES A NUMBER OF LAKES TOO PUNCTUATE THE RIFT VALLEY
FLOOR. The lakes are
formed by the drainage of rivers into the Rift Valley floor,
filling the depressions. Except Lake Baringo and Lake Naivasha,
all of them are shallow, alkaline and have no outlet. They
provide an ideal environment for a variety of bird life, most
pronounced being the flamingoes. Millions of flamingoes inhabit
the lakes and shift from on to another to find the most suitable
environment in the ever changing water levels of the lakes.
Lake Elementaita, Lake Naivasha and Lake Nakuru were joint
thousands of years ago, covering the complete Naivasha / Nakuru
Rift Valley floor. Due to climatic changes and reduced inflows
the large lake split into three and gave way for savannah
bush land such as Hells Gate and Nakuru National Park and
ranch land such as Soysambu and Kikopey.
